Over the years, musicians have been drawn to the world of acting; think of the likes of Elvis, Frank Sinatra, to David Bowie and Madonna. And let’s not forget The Spice Girls with their forgettable Spice World.

This feature takes that notion a step further, as it sees record label Invada make its first foray into the world of film.

The label was created by Geoff Barrow, member of the band Portishead, who has also co-written and produced this first film from Invada.

To continue the musical theme, it also stars Jason Williamson, lead singer and lyricist for post-punk band Sleaford Mods, in what is a very dark thriller.

I'm not sure this self-driving car has driven before....

It’s the nineties, and David (Marc Bessant) has been having it large at a rave. He eventually decides to get in his car and leave, only to end up in a terrible car accident.

The next thing he knows, he wakes up, suspended by his seatbelt, in his overturned car in the woods. He tries numerous times to set himself free, but the seatbelt appears to be faulty due to the crash, and there’s no getting out.

He is relieved when a man arrives, poacher (Williamson) discovers him in his car, but David soon realises that helping him is far off of his agenda.

So what you're saying is that you're not a fan of my latest album...

The film marks the directorial debut for John Minton, who certainly places his stamp on it visually. The majority of the film takes place in the woods, and the locale is striking, especially when the characters involved consume drugs.

It’s a take on a hunter and hunted theme, but one with a major restraint, that being David trapped inside his car. Williamson is satisfyingly brutal as an unhinged poacher, but most of the kudos has to be given to Bessant, who spends the majority of the film suspended upside down.

It’s a remarkable debut for all those involved, including Invada, with what is a gripping and atmospheric story, that’s possibly only let down by its final act, that is weak compared to the strong two thirds.

Still, it’s superbly absorbing, that maintains a disturbing level of tension throughout, which sees all those concerned definitely raise their game.
