Ready or Not 2: Here I come

15¦ Blu-ray, DVD

You would think that with all the special effects needed for a horror film, they would be fairly expensive to make. But that’s not the case, just ask Blumhouse, who have literally made billions (over a 11 of them), with their The Paranormal Activity and The Purge franchises.

It’s only natural that others jump on this lucrative bandwagon; 2019’s Ready or Not made over $55 million at the box office, which is made more impressive by the fact it was made for only $6 million. Ker-ching indeed.

This sequel then, was inevitable, and picks up where the first left off.

My god, she's not wearing any deodorant!!!

It’s been quite a night for Grace (Samara Weaving), when her wedding didn’t exactly go to plan. She’s in quite a state, covered in blood, as she’s whisked away in the ambulance to the hospital.

It’s there that she is reunited with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton), who she hasn’t seen in seven years. She’s only there as Grace had her as her next of kin contact, and it’s far from a happy re-union.

It’s quickly made worse when someone tries to kill them. It transpires that although she survived, the game isn’t over yet, as the remaining members of the Council know that the head seat and ring are up for grabs, and all they have to do is, well, kill Grace.

Again, Grace has no say in this unfortunately, as she’s transported to a new mansion’s complex, but being as she is handcuffed to her sister, she has company for this deadly game.

Go ahead, call me Margot Robbie one more time...

It’s no surprise that this is very much more of the same, considering it’s from the same writers and directors. However, it doesn’t quite have the same chilling charm as the first – coming mostly from the fact it was an original idea.

Obviously a sequel comes with a certain amount of baggage and expectancy, following as it does the first’s bloody blueprint. It does come with a new cast to play with though, which includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elijah Wood, and a cameo from the great horror maker David Cronenberg.

Its name should really have been Ready or Not 2: Déjà Vu, as it goes about the killer hide and seek game it began in the original. And it does well emulating the first, as you would expect, but the script is on the woolly side. It also feels like its missing a few tricks, most notably by being more humorous as well as blood-soaked, as well as a missed gag involving Elijah Wood and a certain ring.

And as you would expect, it runs out of steam by the end, too dense with its story lore owing it more credit than it’s due.

That said, it once again made money at the box office, so job done.

The addition of Grace’s sister to the game is simply an attempt to times the amount of peril by two, as well as add an extra heart string or two to play with throughout.

As a horror sequel goes, it does pretty much what it says on the tin, and will delight fans of the original film.

No doubt the production team will be thinking of a way to squeeze out another sequel, despite wringing out as much as they can here, but it may well be something that will find its way to audiences, ready or not.
