The Office: An American Workplace - series 5

12

With the news that Steve Carell has handed in his resignation, the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin won’t be quite the same ever again. Carell’s Michael Scott has managed the impossible in usurping David Brent on almost every level; not only has he managed to maintain Brent’s outrageous ethical and moral code, but he’s managed to do so without being a monster. Despite his obvious inability to manage, Scott has a heart.

Even though the internet has made the world a smaller place, there has been some serious lag in getting regular episodes of this hit US series airing in the UK. In one sense it’s a blessing, as we still get to see Carell very much miss-firing on all cylinders in series 5.

As you all know I'm leaving soon. So I'm going to need a stripper in a cake. And remember, choose nut free, we don't want anyone having an allergic reaction.

Despite being five series in, this show is still as strong as ever. The characters certainly have a lot to do with its continued success. Even though they are so well defined and fleshed out by now, with each one having their own idiosyncrasies, they are still able to cause upsets and surprises.

But the real reason it still manages to entertain is the writing. The writers have got a real handle on the characters they’re writing for, and truly push them to their limits.

This series sees the relationship between Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski) crack on at a pace, whilst the introduction of new blood, by way of HR Toby’s replacement Holly (Amy Ryan), gives Michael Scott more ammunition in which to shoot himself down in flames with.

And although not exactly brimming with extras, series 5 on DVD has some nice features; including a couple of the made-only-for-the-net webisodes, and a lively interview on stage with all the cast members involved.

Obviously Michael Scott will be sorely missed and almost irreplaceable, but with such a strong team left in Scranton, life in The Office will go on.
